Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
