The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
