India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog After Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Several parts of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended limit established by the global health authority.

Particular areas, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than healthy levels.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Developments

Since 2020, the government had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly pollution that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected regional leadership approached the judicial authority to seek a modification of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".

Court Ruling and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities approved the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Several air quality sensors throughout the city registered pollution peaking around late evening to extremely hazardous readings observed during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from neighboring India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Problem

Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in Delhi have remained as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Various Contamination Contributors

The situation in the city is attributed to a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air sets in.

Medical and Economic Consequences

The economic and health consequences on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous research.

These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k early fatalities per year in Delhi.
