In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
