When We Are Witnessing the Decline of the Cult of Aggressive Cricket, Let’s Appreciate Its Legacy.
The Journey of a Movement can be characterized by specific steps.
1. The Big Idea
An inspiring figure or figureheads introduce a new and transcendent idea offering a panacea for alienated and vulnerable people.
And so it goes. They’re getting ready to confront the system overseas. Pressure is mounting. Smoke is rising from within. An isolated player, naked, nervous, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET smeared across his chest as a symbol, has stumbled into view and is removed in secrecy to a different team elsewhere.
Do you ever miss the start, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of pure instinct.
2. Love-Bombing
Movement founders promise a new start, hope for a future, support, redemption among a group with shared faith in the big idea.
How did it feel at first? Players celebrating feeling good. Body art. Muscles. Determination. Confident masculinity. Of course, England’s players will claim it’s not a real term, which is funny since it’s not recognized, what exactly did I just watch?
But we know what it is. It’s the batsman playing a shot so depraved it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the captain at his peak, an expression conveying: pensive Nordic god, beard made of wood, untamed style, so authentically Modern Savage you wouldn’t be surprised to glance over and see him playing in the field stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.
It’s the opener often seen to talk in press conferences, appearing as a cheerful animal in a waistcoat, expressing thoughts like we are actively deconstructing the orange. And yes, the energy, initially, was only good energy.
3. A New Life
Building period. Togetherness strengthened by rote learning of mantras. These principles are often illogical as a loyalty check.
Is it just me? The criticism, the outrage, the disappointment post-defeat appears excessive, unwarranted. The batting collapsed during the match, as they often do in Australia. They were dominated defensively for a couple of hours as plans unraveled, manipulated by Travis Head imitating their style effectively, adaptive to conditions, an athlete shining with a kind of light around him.
Now there is the criticism, the rage, the perception of the team as a kind of abomination. The consensus is that losing isn’t enough, they should be dismantled, to be cleansed, destroyed, destroyed via traditional methods of the bowler’s action, the low-fi orthodoxies of the veteran, seen enjoying successes humbly similar to getting a rewarding prize. How will they respond?
4. The Backlash Phase
Problems arise from failures in the plan. Yet, mistakes are denied. It starts to feed on anger towards critics.
In truth, a few days before the upcoming game, we have now reached a delicious point of tension in the lifespan of this movement. England could quite easily win overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. More likely, they could lose just as quickly. In case of defeat it appears we really might be entering the final stage.
Ahead of this, there are two things to note regarding this. Previously, back in those heady early days, of light and heat, an piece was published labeling it a movement. There was outrage, which proved the point because everyone knows how to confirm that it’s not a closed group is when its acolytes respond with anger objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.
Recent events in the last few days are equally notable. It seems that hating Bazball has turned into a movement. Social media is furious, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset followers overseas missing out on play, reminiscent of people wanting fairness.
Meanwhile, there is the broader context of Australia’s more nuanced ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, stating, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured as part of your identity from the opposition, it’s not serious in the end old boy.
And this is the real point. Everything is a cult. The style was a trend since the sport itself is insular. Or rather, the sport in England is closed, a circle, a private event, an insular community with a long history of tradition and mystery defining it. Historically, this was a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the colonial game of the British, the original sports washers. And notably, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a royal family remains.
The team have been sealed up in this environment from a young age. Attempting to break free, to build a better atmosphere, they are just repeating their upbringing, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, however with a modern squad and a leader promoting authenticity provided you conform.
Live where your feet are. Embrace challenges. However much you change, you’re always basically in the same place.
Reflecting on this, now is the time to show understanding for the movement, to appreciate its good points, of which there are many. What does it represent? Creating a sense of freedom. Challenging orthodoxies. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
